What do all of those words mean?
When you’re looking at your dental insurance policy, there are a lot of numbers by a lot of unfamiliar words. Here are some of the most common types of coverages you’ll find in a dental insurance policy:
Deductible Limits– The amount of money that must be paid before the insurance company will pay a covered claim.
Coinsurance– After the deductible is met, the insured will pay a percentage of the payment made against a claim. For example, you have a dental plan that covers 80% of major services after a $50 deductible. You need a root canal that will cost $2000. The total amount that you would pay in this example is $390, and the insurance would pay the other $1610.
CoPayment– Often called a copay, a copayment is a flat amount paid for a covered service.
Annual Benefit Maximum– The most the insurance company will pay for an insured per year.
Effective Date– The date in which coverage goes into effect.
Preventive Care Services– Services that include routine exams and cleanings.
Basic Services– Services that included basic fillings and extractions.
Major Services– Services that usually include root canals, crowns, oral surgery, and bridges.
Waiting Period– Many dental insurance policies include a waiting period before the full benefits of the policy can be used.
